Electrician in the Rhondda

Porth, Tonypandy, Treorchy and the villages up both valleys. The Rhondda is terraced housing almost end to end, much of it over a century old, and it throws up the kind of wiring that needs somebody who has seen it before.

The houses here, and what they need

Rhondda terraces were built for the collieries and they share a pattern: stone or solid brick walls, small rooms, steep stairs, and a supply that came in at the front. Most have been rewired at some point, but "at some point" can mean the 1970s. Rubber cable, no RCD protection and boards with rewireable fuses are all still out there. Where a house has been extended or had a loft done, the new work is often on top of the old, which is exactly what an EICR is for.

What we get asked for most in Rhondda

01

Full rewires

The most common big job up the valley. Prices are by the size of the house and how the cable is run, and a two bed terrace is at the cheaper end of the scale.

02

Fuse boards with proper protection

Plenty of Rhondda houses are still on a board with no RCD at all. A new consumer unit gives every circuit its own protection, and it is usually a day in and out.

EV charging without a driveway

Most Rhondda terraces park on the street, which changes the job completely. There is a grant for cross-pavement charging, and there are rules about what the council will allow. It is all set out in the terraced street guide.

Street parking and EV chargers

If you park on the street, a charger on the front wall is not a case of running a cable out of the window. It needs a proper cross-pavement channel and the council has to agree to it. Worth starting that conversation before buying anything.

Questions we get asked in Rhondda

Can I have an EV charger if I park on the street?
Not with a cable across the pavement, which is not allowed. What does work is a cross-pavement channel agreed with the council, and there is a government grant of up to £500 towards it for households with only on-street parking. Start with what your council permits on your street, because that decides everything else.
Are valley terraces dearer to rewire than a modern semi?
A little, and it is the walls that do it. Solid stone or brick means chasing rather than dropping cable down a hollow wall, and the stepped floors and small rooms add time. A two bed terrace is still at the cheaper end of the scale overall because there is less of it.
How far up the valleys do you come?
All of it: Porth, Tonypandy, Ystrad, Pentre, Treorchy, Treherbert, Ferndale and Tylorstown, which is CF39 through CF43.
